After back surgery in 2013, Murray has made it a more important part of his fitness routine
“It’s helped my back a lot,” Murray said. “People think, ‘Oh he has a bad back,’ but it can be due to having stiff hips or weak hamstrings or whatever.”
This spring, Murray asked one of his instructors, Teresina Goheen, to travel to Barcelona, where he prepared for the clay-court season. He also works with another instructor based in Miami, where Murray has a home. When he is living in London, he works with various teachers at Cobham Pilates in the county of Surrey, south of London.
Murray said that Goheen and the instructor in Miami are both former dancers. “What they said to me is that a lot of dancers, they get a lot of injuries because they’re very flexible from a very young age but then they don’t have the strength,” Murray said. “So they found that the Gyrotonics helped them.”
Pilates involves low-impact exercises that strengthen core muscles; Gyrotonic incorporates yoga and rotational movements with the aid of handles and pulleys.
Murray said his workouts have done more than help his back. “The rest of my body feels much better,” he said.
